Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credits

Last week the White House announced the award of $2.3 billion in Recovery Act Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credits for clean energy manufacturing projects across the United States. One hundred eighty three projects in 43 states will create tens of thousands of high quality clean energy jobs and the domestic manufacturing of advanced clean energy technologies including solar, wind and efficiency and energy management technologies.

"Building a robust clean energy sector is how we will create the jobs of the future," said President Obama. "The Recovery Act awards I am announcing today will help close the clean energy gap that has grown between America and other nations while creating good jobs, reducing our carbon emissions and increasing our energy security."

"By investing in innovative clean energy manufacturing projects like these, we are not only creating good jobs now, but helping lay a new foundation to keep America competitive in the 21st century economy," said Vice President Biden. "This is what the Recovery Act is all about."

This effort, along with other Recovery Act investments, is intended to drive significant growth in the renewable energy and clean technology manufacturing sectors and give the United States the ability to lead globally in these markets. The investment tax credits, worth up to thirty percent of each planned project, will leverage private capital for a total investment of nearly $7.7 billion in high-tech manufacturing in the United States.

The announcement includes tax credits for several GLWN member companies, including:

  • Alstom Inc.
  • American Railcar Industries
  • Cardinal Fastener & Specialty Company, Inc.
  • Cleveland Gear Company, Inc.
  • Great Lakes Industry, Inc.
  • Horsburgh & Scott Co.
  • Kaydon
  • MetoKote Corporation
  • Roller Bearing Co. of America, Inc.

AWEA Signs Partnership Agreement with GLWN

AWEA recently signed a formal partnership agreement with Great Lakes WIND Network for expanding the outreach and engagement of state-level organizations related to wind turbine manufacturing. As part of the AWEA Supply Chain initiative, GLWN is conducting a series of regional supply chain workshops and other activities to promote the manufacture of wind turbines, turbine components and sub-components, and related services in areas such as transportation and logistics. GLWN brings industry knowledge, manufacturing and wind industry supply chain experience, and a track record of connecting buyers and sellers that is helping to grow the U.S. wind turbine market. Through this partnership, AWEA and GLWN join forces to accelerate the growth of component manufacturing capabilities in time for the next wave of turbine orders.

Ed Weston, director of Great Lakes WIND Network, commented that, "Partnering with AWEA helps us to reach more manufacturers and extend the supply chain network nationwide. Our goal is to help companies make wise investments in time and money in evaluating and entering this market."

Through the AWEA-GLWN partnership, Great Lakes WIND Network will participate in AWEA's national Supply Chain Workshops which, in 2010 will extend beyond the upper Midwest to three new parts of the country. The spring 2010 Supply Chain workshop will take place March 16-17, 2010 in Greensboro, North Carolina, which will be followed by a day-long pre-conference Supply Chain Workshop that will be held in conjunction with WINDPOWER® 2010 in May 2010 in Dallas, Texas. Finally, the fall 2010 AWEA Supply Chain Workshop will take place in October in conjunction with the AWEA Off-Shore Workshop in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Green Energy Collaboration in the Northwest

Renewable Energy Composite Solutions (RECS), a Vancouver, Washington based company, is poised to start commercial production of the Skyron Systems SSi-5m3 vertical axis wind turbine in February 2010. RECS will draw on the extensive resources of its sister company Christensen Shipyards, a world renowned composite luxury yacht builder.

Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

A $1 million federal stimulus grant that was awarded to RECS in October 2009 by the Washington State Department of Commerce will help the company retool and retrain its workforce for the project. Once in full production, the project is expected to create approximately 200 green energy jobs, helping a region that has been hit hard by the economic downturn.

The SSi-5m3 turbines' composite blades are fabricated using the vacuum infusion process and assembled into a steel superstructure. This multi-solution, vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) targets a variety of field applications involving on-site generation solutions for urban and remote sites.

In addition to the benefits offered by other turbine technologies, SKYRON's product is designed to

  • provide a cost-efficient alternative energy source
  • provide customers and utilities the benefits of on-site generation
  • provide another means for remote power generation and water pumping to remote and developing regions
  • address specific commercial applications such as dewatering natural gas wells
  • enable the utilization of a turbine product in close-quarter urban applications

SKYRON is an emerging renewable energy company headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon. The company is positioning to manufacture and sell multi-solution, vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) that target a variety of field applications involving on-site generation solutions for urban and remote sites.

Renewable Energy Composite Solutions is the Pacific Northwest's wind turbine and hydrokinetic composite component fabrication and manufacturing specialist. For on- and off-shore wind turbines, and ocean, marine, and tidal hydrokinetic components, RECS delivers state-of-the-art composite fabrication solutions.
